On
behalf of my team I am proud to present the 10th E-Newsletter of
IEEE -NUCES Karachi. Working consistently for 10 months and
producing quality work (at least we tried to) was never an easy task
for us. I would like to thank the readers along with the IEEE members
who have contributed a lot by giving there feedback. I specially
would like to thank the sophomore members of IEEE-NUCES Karachi for
putting there best in this work and I also wish best of luck to the
future E-Newsletter coordinator and the team and expect them not
only to continue this effort but also bring some improvements.

of SPORTICS had a busy time last month and they conducted several
events and proved their worth by inaugurating a SPORTICS room on the

proper arrangements have been made. Sports room was inaugurated
under the supervision of Zubair Sheikh.
SIBSS - MOVIE SHOW
Besides
providing students with study resources SIBBS decided to provide
students with some kind of entertainment so that they get relief
from the hectic schedule they face in the university. The event was
organized in Auditorium (Engineering block) and it hit on the big
screen on 6th of April. P&G Test A Team from Proctor & Gamble ( P&G) came to FAST-NU in March. They gave a presentation regarding their organization. The leader of the team was an IT graduate and is working in the human resource department of the organization. They also conducted a job test of Fastian seniors. Selected candidates will be invited for interviews.
Presentation: Optical Fiber Deployment A presentation on optical fiber deployment and demonstration of OTDR and fusion splicing was given by two employees from SATTCOMM (Imtiaz Ahmed and Jibran Ahmed) on 7th April 2006 in Engineering Block Auditorium here in FAST Karachi campus.
SOFTECH 2006 Fastians from Karachi campus went to Lahore to participate in the mega event of SOFTECH 2006. FAST Karachi students participated in programming and gamming competitions.

Hungarian researchers find H5N1 bird flu vaccine for humans: Showing journalists a vial of the vaccine, Gyurcsany said it "contains six micrograms (of an active agent), enough for one person to be immunised against the H5N1 virus. “This is a product manufactured from an aluminium and phosphate viral gel, for which nobody else at the moment has the (production) technology," he added.
A vaccine to protect birds against H5N1 avian influenza already
exists but this one is the first to protect humans. This new service is known as “one seg” after “one segment.” The subscribers will be able to watch up to nearly three hours of uninterrupted television with a normal cell phone battery.
The service will be free for now and programming will be the same as
on home televisions as mobile operators examine whether One Seg will prove
to be popular or not.
It marks a significant milestone on the path towards functioning
transparent electronics applications, which many believe could be a large
future industry. Just as a moving electrical charge creates a magnetic field, so a moving mass generates a gravitomagnetic field. According to Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, the effect is virtually negligible. However, Martin Tajmar, ARC Seibersdorf Research GmbH, Austria; Clovis de Matos, ESA-HQ, Paris; and colleagues have measured the effect in a laboratory.
"If confirmed, this would be a major breakthrough," says Tajmar who
performed the experiments. "it opens up a new means of investigating general
relativity and its consequences in the quantum world."
The much-heralded Windows Vista operating system will be ready this year, as planned, but only for big businesses, according to the Redmond, Washington-based software giant. A beta version of Vista is on track to be delivered to two million computer users for testing performance and security in the second quarter of this year, according to Microsoft. Vista has been touted by Microsoft as a secure, efficient platform for home, mobile and office computer use.

EMBEDDED INTERNET DEVICES AND JAVA TECHNOLOGY By Syed Faisal-ur-Rehman During 50s or 60s no body would have imagined for an alarm clock with its own microprocessors but now such devices known as embedded devices are common like TVs, air conditioners, microwave ovens have there own processing devices and operating systems. Another break through in this regard is the emergence of embedded internet technology which has given a new dimension to this field. A person in 80s or early 90s would have never thought of a TV connected to the internet but now with the emergence of embedded internet devices all this has become possible. Java has been one of the leading technology companies which are developing the tools which will support this great advancement. Java’s J2ME consisting of Java’s virtual machine specification and API specifications which are designed for the special requirements of each products. Java has developed many APIs mostly based on J2ME to cater the needs of different embedded devices for example for mobile devices such as cell phones and two way pagers they have developed J2ME Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), to develop interactive applications JAVA has developed a JAVA TV API, JAVA has also introduced API for card technology and many more are there for the developers. All these are dependent on JVM like JAVA PC applications except for the fact that instead of using operating systems like windows, Linux etc the devices on which JVM will run have there own type of RTOS or real time operating systems. The RTOS from which the Java VM derives some of its functionality allows the Java VM to abstract itself from device-specific architectures. In exchange, the Java VM provides a secure wrapper around the RTOS. Today with the development of such technologies it is now possible to find your location and the shortest root to your destination by sitting in an internet connected car and in future you will see moms will cook food while going for shopping and accessing there kitchen servers just by using there hand held devices. I hope after reading this article would have at least given you an introduction to embedded internet devices and would have given you some ideas for your future projects.
