  What exactly is IEEE?

IEEE is the acronym of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It is a global; New York based organization that promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession.

  What does IEEE-NUCES mean and do?

IEEE-NUCES Karachi is one of the 1300 student branches in the whole world. It organizes seminars, tutorials, workshops and paper calls to fulfill/support the research and engineering process in the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Karachi campus. Upon joining IEEE, a student member automatically becomes a member of IEEE-NUCES Karachi branch. So, you’re welcomed!

  IEEE is only for engineers, right?

No, it is a misconception that IEEE relates only to engineers. IEEE actually correlates to all the electrical technologies. (Electrical Technology is a broad term it includes electronics, communication and computer technologies.) IEEE publishes/archives a majority of computer science research material.

 Why become a student Member?

IEEE Student Membership is a connection to the big world of Electrical Technologies. There are other so called Grades of membership as well but student membership is where an electrical or electronics engineer usually starts with.

  Student members have:
• One year free subscription and free online access of IEEE Spectrum, the magazine that puts in touch with the latest scientific developments, exploring the creation, application and implications of new technologies.
• Access to any IEEE abstract/citation record. (More than 1,000,000 documents!).
• Eligibility to compete for up to $250,000 in IEEE Student Awards and Scholarships.

By the way, each year IEEE-NUCES announces a 50% discount to first 20 or 30 students on their membership fees. So keep watching for that also.

 What are other Types of Membership?

Besides the student membership, there are other higher grades of membership, depending on the experience and expertise of a person. Other grades are: member, associate, senior member and fellow.

It is always ideal to start with Student Membership to have a hands-on professional, technological experience.
