Center for Research in Artificially Intelligent Systems (CRAIS)

The major focus of CRAIS is to develop capable systems, which can meet the growing demands of scalability, high performance, security, and intelligence. The center also aims to develop applied solutions across various domains where artificial intelligence can empower efficiency and accuracy. Motivated by the emerging utilization of Machine Learning and Deep Learning, the center aims to concentrate on a diverse set of domains. These include Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), Computer Vision, High Performance Computing, Cloud Computing, Network Security, and Software Defined Networking.

The center has two labs:

  1. The AI lab has received grant from National center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) to develop personalized e-learning solutions through Artificial Intelligence.
  2. Syslab has received grants from HEC and NVIDIA to develop high performance computing solutions for various problems.
The center has received research grants from NVIDIA, HEC, and NCAI.

Systems Research Laboratory (SysLab)

SysLab focuses on research and development for building systems which can solve real-world problems through integration of several computing domains. These include Cloud Systems, Distributed systems, big data, Machine and Deep learning, High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, and Mobile applications. Research at SysLab is inspired by many considerations related to Security, Scalability, Quality of Service, Performance Enhancement, Analytics, accuracy, efficacy, and usability of these systems.

Centre for Research in Data Science

Data Science is a dynamic and fast-growing field at the interface of Statistics and Computer Science. It is an interdisciplinary field to get knowledge and various insights from data. The Data Science Research Group at Karachi Campus of National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences addresses the challenges associated with getting information from homogeneous and heterogeneous data. Research group mainly focuses on machine learning and information processing techniques for data analysis with main applications in writer identification, face recognition, cancer classification, multi-label classification, social media data analysis and information visualization. Data Science is going to become an important discipline in Computer Science. The research group will focus on Research Associates and Research Assistants innovative development in this field.


Distributed Applications Group (DAG)

The group focuses on multidisciplinary research ranging from distributed systems, its applications in crowd sourcing, implementations of distributed applications that supports handicapped community, building up distributed AI applications in healthcare, developing distributed intelligent human-aware applications that possesses context awareness, Internet of Things based application development, developing Block chain based interoperable heterogeneous IOT applications etc. The group is also working in developing distributed learning theories and frameworks following the Software Quality Assurance standards to enhance the distributed virtual learning environments. Group’s research is fundamental, aimed at harnessing the true potential of distributed crowdsourcing to enhance various phases of software development ranging from requirements engineering until managing bug repositories.


Smart Intelligence Lab

The Smart Intelligence Research Group has goals to contribute to the state of the art through research, development, and innovation in the scope of information and communication technologies for Internet of Things (IoT) and Next Generation Networks and Applications. The topics are extremely relevant in telecommunications, digital health and intelligent solutions for livestocks. It intends to perform innovative research aiming to explore an increasing available amount of data in a growing connected world. It focuses on developing new technologies, solutions, and approaches exploring data from their generation and knowledge creation, including their storage, treatment, and analysis. Machine learning and data driven solutions with the nexus of IoT devices is going to bring a new wave of innovation in multiple sectors including health care, industrial automation, urban planning and smart cities.

IT Security Lab

IT Security Labs at the Computer Science department at the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Karachi Campus studies and teaches security problems and solutions for different types of Information and Communication paradigms. The research Lab is concerned with all aspects of applied Computer Security, with an emphasis on network security, web security, mobile security, Blockchain Solutions and secure architectures and protocols for Cloud and IoTs.

English Language Teaching

The English Language Teaching research interest group aims to produce quality research in the field of English language teaching in Pakistan. The key themes explored in this group focus on English in Pakistani higher education. The group endeavors to explore the effectiveness of the current communicative methodologies and the test-teach-test method in language courses. One such stream of research is the integration of Information and Communications Technology in language instruction. Language testing is also a key area of interest for the group. Themes in current English Language Teaching practices such as globalization and the need for English language competence, project based learning in language courses, and teaching English to a diverse group of students are also significant areas of research in the group.

Numerical Computing

Research of this group is mainly focused to develop and implement numerical methods to solve delay, fractional and fuzzy differential equations, modeled during the study of multiple physical phenomena. The previous work of group members was more towards developing methods related to neural networks architecture with optimization to get the numerical solution of nonlinear complex differential equations. Currently, for the forthcoming work, providing an optimal solution for the construction of Sindh Barrage by analysis of water distribution networks based on explicit calculation of discharge by using the Darcy-Weisbach energy loss equation and the Swamee and Jain friction equation is under consideration.

Intelligent Systems Group

The Intelligent Systems group is engaged with the research and development on Intelligent systems in cross-disciplinary settings. Our main focus is intelligent, data driven and behavioral modelling and control of the systems such as electric power systems, plant health management systems and autonomous multi-agent systems.

Intelligent Networks Research Centre

IntelliNet is a group of people working towards a smarter future with their intellectual endeavours. Our association with the Computer Science Department, FAST-National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan, believes that the future is smart devices and networks, which facilitate us and create numerous research opportunities. We develop intelligent systems for Next Generation Networks like Internet of Things, Name Data Networks, 5G Networks, etc.

Climate Variability, Space Science & Technology

The group’s recent work is focused on the study of the large-scale semi-permanent high and low pressure systems known as the Atmospheric Centers of Action. These centers of action include mainly Azores High, Icelandic Low, Siberian High etc. Multivariate statistical techniques and techniques of linear algebra have been utilized in the group’s research work, to show that these centers of High/Low pressure systems play an important role in explaining the wintertime climate variability over various regions in contrast of El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) which are considered as major contributor of climate variability over the large part of the globe.

Islamic Studies

The respective research group has been established in collaboration with Dr. Naveed Gani, Associate Professor (Psychiatry), Islam Medical and Dental College, Sialkot and Mr. Muhammad Farooq Shaikh, Assistant Registrar, High Court of Sindh Karachi. The group’s recent work is focused on a study finding out the reasons for the increasing trend of divorce in the society, evaluating those reasons and providing righteous solutions in the light of Quran and Sunnah. The respective research is purely quantitative in nature, based on the cases reported in Family Courts and from various Dar al Ifta of Karachi. The study will be presented and published soon in a form of a research article, substantially.
